After premiering his short film La enorme presencia de los muertos in the competitive section dedicated to film students (NEST) of the San Sebastian Film Festival, filmmaker José María Avilés, a graduate of the first year of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, premieres his first feature film, Al Oriente, at the Venice Film Festival, following its selection at the Biennale College Cinema. The film tells the story of Atahualpa, a builder who works on the construction of a road that spans a path with a complex historical legacy.
Nest alumni Oren Gerner (2014), David Pinheiro (2018) and Rafael Manuel (2020) have been selected with their new projects in Locarno Filmmakers Academy, the Locarno Film Festival's ten-day intensive program focused on the new generation of filmmakers. Residents also have the opportunity to show their short films to the Festival audience during the Filmmakers Academy screening days.
Two of the short films selected for the 20th edition of Nest, the San Sebastian Festival's international student film competition, won awards at the last Locarno Festival (Switzerland). Fantasma Neon / Neon Phantom, by Brazilian Leonardo Martinelli, won the Pardino d'Oro of the international short film competition, while After a Room, by Swiss Naomi Pacifique, won the Pardino d'Argento in the short national competition. Both will be screened at the next edition of the San Sebastian Festival along with the other 12 short films selected for Nest.
El gran movimiento, the second feature film by Kiro Russo that was developed in the Ikusmira Berriak residency in the 2016 edition, will have its world premiere in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival. Shot entirely in Super 16mm, the film is an approach to the identity of the Bolivian city of La Paz.
Filmmaker Alisha Mehta Tejpal, who competed last year at the Nest section with her work Lata, has been selected in the Sundance Institute's Women's Financing Intensive program with her creative documentary project Untitled Objects. The film seeks to trace missing family heirlooms and the filmmaker unravels her family’s legacy and the parallel evolution of India.
Eles transporten a morte, the first film by Helena Girón and Samuel M. Delgado, which was developed at the Ikusmira Berriak residency in 2017, will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. This adventure story with a critical discourse on colonisation will be presented at the 36th edition Critics' Week.
Chilean filmmaker Nicolás Lasnibat, who presented his short film Treinta años at the 2006 Film Schools Meeting, is the new director of studies at La Femis, France's national film school.
Belgian filmmaker Laura Wandel, who was selected in 2007 at the San Sebastian Festival's International Film Students Meeting with her short film Murs, presented her first feature film Un monde (Playground) at Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Festival, where it won the Fipresci award.
Un monde is a deep immersion into the school universe through the eyes of a girl, Nora, whose older brother is bullied by his classmates.
