The sessions can be followed in person in Room Z, on the first floor of Tabakalera, with prior registration, and by streaming from the Tabakalera and San Sebastian Film Festival web pages.
2deo, the audiovisual laboratory of the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture, in collaboration with the San Sebastian Film Festival, proposes a series of round tables and presentations entitled 2deo, Zinemaldia & Technology, that invite reflection on the influence of new technologies in the cinema and how film-making has been able to take advantage of these as part of a constant reinvention of the processes of audiovisual creation, production and exhibition.
On 16 and 17 June, Room Z will host sessions aimed at technologists, filmmakers and professionals in the film industry. The meeting will also bring together the public and private agents who are making the integration of technology in the sector possible.
Zinemaldia & Technology is an activity that is part of the San Sebastian Film Festival aimed at industry professionals whose objective is to strengthen ties between the technological and audiovisual sectors. The initiative, which includes a master class and the fourth Zinemaldia Startup Challenge business project contest, will take place during the 69th edition of the film festival, but in 2021, for the first time, Zinemaldia & Technology will not limit its activity to September and will promote these sessions in collaboration with 2deo within the festival's strategy for the entire year (Z365).
The sessions will begin on the afternoon of 16 June with a conversation between Maria Penilla Azcuenaga, senior telecommunications engineer, specialist in cybersecurity and technical director of the ZIUR Foundation, and Iñaki Regidor Mendiolea, systems director of the Euskal Irrati Telebista Communication Group and member of the ICT strategic commission of the Basque Government, who will analyse "Cybersecurity in the audiovisual field – How technology can help us to work and consume content safely".
This will be followed by the conference "Artificial Intelligence: the secret ingredient" bySami Arpa, computer scientist, film director and founder of Largo who will raise issues such as the influence and benefits of the use of artificial intelligence in various sectors and in the audiovisual sector in particular.
The first day of the seminars will close with the talk"Art and science behind the process of 3D printing and facial animation in the Oscar-winning studio LAIKA" that will be given by Brian McLean and Benoit Dubuc, members of the award-winning animation studio LAIKA (Missing Link, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, ParaNorman, Coraline) that has revolutionised the stop motion animation process by combining audiovisual techniques with the latest technologies to produce truly amazing films.
On Thursday 17 June, the second day will begin with Irina Albita, co-founder of the FilmChain company (winning team of the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge in 2020) and Oscar Lage, head of cybersecurity and blockchain for the company TECNALIA, who will analyse the importance of transparency and traceability in data transfers and how this technology favours these processes in the conversation "Blockchain: an ally to achieve transparency".
They will be followed by Antton Peña and Tom Wandsworth with "Drones: how innovative technology is taking storytelling to new heights" which will guide us through the latest aerial imaging technologies and the effect they are having on cinematic storytelling. During this session, they will explore the different types of drone currently available on the market, the different perspectives each type can offer, and when to use each of them.
In the talk "VR in film-making: exploring new audiovisual forms", the director, designer, visual and multidisciplinary artist Martin Allais, and Mikel Zorrilla, director of Digital Media at the Vicomtech applied research technology centre, will take as their starting point the short film "Battlescar: Punk Was Invented By Girls” which since its premiere has been shown at more than 30 festivals around the world and has won more than eight awards for the best Narrative VR experience.
Under the heading "The future of film-making", Pedro Escalona, co-owner of the company Trigital, which specialises in workflow solutions for the media and entertainment industry, will moderate a round table involving prestigious speakers: Jordi Bares, post-producer of many of the most important television commercials of the last 20 years for brands such as Adidas, Heneiken, Sony, Honda and many others; Pepe Abellán, a professional with more than two decades of experience in post-production in Spain; and Sérgio Santos, VFX composition supervisor at Dø Postproduction studio where he has worked on projects such as La Casa de Papel, SkyRojo and El Embarcadero.
