The convent where father Muller lives is stormed by Communist soldiers who shoot its religious inhabitants, although the father manages to escape. He is taken prisoner and denies that he is a priest three times, in an obvious parallel with the denial of Jesus Christ by his disciple Peter. Muller is taken before a Communist officer, Gans, a previous friend of his, but who now hates priests. Gans obliges Muller to write a letter confirming that he had deceived people during his years as a priest.
JOSE MARIA FORQUE
In February 1943, three hundred Spanish soldiers from the Blue Division are taken prisoners near Leningrad. They are put into a concentration camp with a commanding officer who orders the Spanish officers to collaborate, but, led by Captain Adrados, the men refuse. The rebels are punished, while those who do as they are told are given better living conditions. Some prisoners of other nationalities give way under pressure, but the Spaniards resist.
JOSE ANTONIO NIEVES CONDE, JOSE MARIA FORQUE
The action takes place in Communist Czechoslovakia, where, afraid of a purge after an accusation of deviationism, the Party Propaganda delegate decides to defect. On the way out of Praga, his bus has an accident in which several passengers are killed. The ex-politician takes on the identity of one of the dead people, a priest who was on his way to a border village. The world he discovers with his new personality is far removed from anything he had ever imagined: people still secretly practice religion in the large catacombs they have built beneath their houses.

In 1917, Our Lady appears to Lucía and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta, three little shepherds from the small Portuguese village of Fatima. Although they promise to keep the secret, Jacinta and Franciso let it out and the whole village eventually hears the story. Lucía is accused of telling lies. Our Lady reappears to Lucía and tells her a miracle will take place on the 13th October which everyone will be able to see. Portugal is undergoing a revolutionary atmosphere and the local judge tries to end what he considers is a farse, but the news spreads over the world. On the 13th October, and in spite of the Portuguese Government's attempts to stop it, a multitude gathers in Fátima and the miracle takes place.
ARTURO RUIZ-CASTILLO
Kubala is the rising star of the Hungarian football team. A politician asks him to spy for his country during an international competition in Italy, which Kubala refuses to do, and they take him off the team in revenge. The football player therefore decides to escape from his country. His companions in the adventure are a Russian defector, a Hungarian dancer and an Austrian baron. In spite of the fact that they are almost caught, they finally make it to Rome. Kubala later makes his way to Spain, where he becomes one of the best players in the country.

Diego, one of the Spanish children who were taken to Russia during the civil war, has been brought up as a Communist and trained for special missions abroad. He works as a spy in France and Italy, until he is given an important task: to go to Spain, where he has to pretend he is trying to escape from Communism, and gain the confidence of his father, who holds an important position and is an obstacle to Communist propaganda. They later offer him the chance to participate in the murder of his own father.
ANTONIO ISASI-ISASMENDI
A high-ranking Soviet officer, general Vasiliev, goes to visit Budapest where Commanding Officer Igor Solov organizes a concert by the Hungarian pianist, Pulac Andras, in his honour. But Andras refuses to play and Solov, for all his weight, is unable to make him change his mind. Those who do succeed, however, are the leaders of the Hungarian resistance, who have organized an uprising due to start right in the middle of the concert: the plan is that, when Andras starts playing "Rhapsody Number 6 ", the rebels previously planted in the audience will take the officials prisoner, while the rebellion spreads from city to city.
JOSE LUIS SAENZ DE HEREDIA
This is the story of a family of military sailors from 1897, just before the Cuban War, until 1939, the year in which the Spanish Civil War came to an end with victory for the Franco regime. The members of the family are all made out to be exemplary, including their most distantly related ancestors, one of whom even participated in the Battle of Trafalgar. The exception is one of the sons from the latest generation, who has socialist ideas and goes over to the Republicans when war breaks out, a black sheep who finally returns to the fold.
CARLOS AREVALO
The action takes place in Madrid, shortly after the outbreak of civil war. Luisa and Miguel are in love, but the fighting has put them on opposing sides. She is a Falangist and helps the Franco followers who have been taken prisoner, while he is a Communist and fights in defence of the Republic. When Luisa is arrested and executed, Miguel reacts strongly and stands up to his companions, which leads to him being shot to death by those who had been his comrades.
CESAR FERNANDEZ ARDAVIN
A secret Catholic organization in East Germany helps people over to West Germany, and to escape from Communism. Their system involves hiding the fugitives in boats and crossing the border by the Baltic Sea. Georg, the government delegate, is ordered to stop this illegal emigration; but he is in love with a woman whose brother is one of the directors of the secret organization, and she herself is an outstanding activist.
