Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Ten Years of Ikusmira Berriak cycle, jointly organised by the Festival, Tabakalera and Elias Querejeta Zine Eskola, proposes an exploration and celebration, in retrospect, of the ten years of the Ikusmira Berriak film residency. This second session will feature a screening of the short film Calipatria (2017, 8'), directed by Leo Calice and Gerhard Treml, and the feature film Eles transportan a morte (2021, 75'), directed by Helena Girón and Samuel Delgado.
Synopsis:
Calipatria: Calipatria is the name of a state prison situated in California´s desert. Santiago Cassilas is one the prisoners: 58 years, member of a gang, convicted to life sentence in solitary confinement. Santiago works one hour a day in prison´s garden, and that will be the place where he reveales his feelings, life history, secrets and dreams, beyond prison´s walls.
Eles transportan a morte: 1492. Travelling among the crew captained by Christopher Columbus are two men who should have been dead by now. They have managed to avoid their sad fate by signing up for the uncertain voyage. But on reaching the Canary Islands the men flee, taking one of the shipâs sails with them. Meanwhile, in the Old World, a woman tries to save her dying sister by taking her to a healer. Both journeys try to outwit death. Both journeys are at the mercy of time and history.
