Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, aged 55 and without any previous experience as a stage actress, Monica Bellucci decided to accept a proposal by stage director Tom Volf to play Maria Callas in a theatrical piece based on the memories and private correspondence of the great operatic diva: “When I read her letters I was deeply moved,” Bellucci explains. I had the feeling that I was taking over her soul and I was immediately assailed by the need to share that feeling with more people. So, when I was offered this monologue I couldn’t refuse, even though I had never done any theatre before. It was an ambitious project, involving a world tour over three years and performing the play in three different languages. From the beginning, I was afraid to be alone on stage, it made me feel terribly exposed but directly receiving all that energy from the audience made this experience unique. And, to top it all off, we finished the tour in New York, Maria Callas’ hometown in 2023 coinciding with the centenary of her birth. It was something magical.” That tour, the rehearsals that preceded it and the promotional interviews and press conferences that accompanied it are the cornerstone of Maria Callas: Letters and Memoirs, the feature film that the Italian actress presented yesterday in Perlak.
