Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
An old acquaintance of the Perlak section, where in previous years he presented The Florida Project and Red Rocket, Sean Baker made history this year at the Cannes Film Festival by winning the Palme d’Or for Anora. The film, just like his previous work, is a journey through the underside of the American dream narrated through the ups and downs of a series of characters who build up frustrations, and this ends up humanizing them in the eyes of the viewer: “The audience relates to the characters not because of their virtues but because of their faults and as a director, it is really important that this identification occurs. I wouldn’t dare to identify the characters in my films as losers; they are real people, human beings with all that implies. For example, if I have to talk about the characters in this film, that feeling of humiliation that the main character ends up suffering is something that is really human, just like celebrating your success by rubbing it in the face of others. I am interested in portraying those frustrations and disappointments that make us terribly vulnerable.”
In Anora, Sean Baker tells the story of Ani, a young stripper who one day, in the club where she works, meets a young Russian who hires her to be his companion for a week and who she ends up marrying after a party in Las Vegas. However, the young man’s parents, a couple of tycoons, will do everything they can to get the marriage annulled.
