Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Portuguese director Laura Carreira presented her debut feature On Falling yesterday in the Official Selection at the Festival. The film tells the story of Aurora, a Portuguese warehouse picker who works in a vast fulfilment centre in Scotland. Trapped between the confines of her workplace and the solitude of her flatshare, she seeks to resist the loneliness, alienation and ensuing small talk which begin to threaten her sense of self.
On falling is a social portrait that explores the struggle to find meaning in life and asks the question: “what is the cost of living like this?” At the presentation of her film in the Kursaal the director said that while the film wasn’t strictly autobiographical, it did reflect her difficult early years in Scotland as a migrant. It also tackles themes like job insecurity, mental health and loneliness although Carreira said that she hadn’t intended to make a film about how difficult it was to get to the end of the month, but had aimed for something more existential.
