Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The French director Ladj Ly is closing the Perlak section this year with his second film Les Indésirables. Just like his first film Les Misérables, it is set in Montfermail, the neighbourhood that he grew up in. He says that it’s a place that provides you with thousands of stories that all deserve to be told, but what is really important is that they can be told by local people who rarely ever get to be seen on the big screen. On this occasion he has given a woman the leading role in his film as he wanted to highlight all those women in his neighbourhood who push the boundaries and also to make use of this character to condemn the loss of rights that we are witnessing with the rise of all these far-right parties that are starting to come to power.
