Io capitano the latest film by Matteo Garrone, is currently being screened in the Perlak section, after competing at Venice. The Italian director of Gomorra and Dogman says that the idea of shooting a film about the epic journey of two Senegalese teenagers who dream of getting to Europe came to him after talking to a lot of Sub-Saharan African youngsters who had undertaken the adventure of trying to get to Europe. “I mention adventure quite deliberately, as they themselves referred to their journey in these terms. I wanted to respect their innocence and tell this story from their rather naïve perspective. I sometimes even thought that Europe, in their imaginary, wasn’t so far from something like what the Land of Toys was for Pinocchio in my previous film.“ He also stresses that he had first auditioned Senegalese youngsters who lived in Europe for the two leading roles but they didn’t have the innocent gaze that Seydou and Moustapha had, as they had never been outside Senegal before.
