Avec amour et acharnement is the third time that Claire Denis and Juliette Binoche have worked together after Un beau soleil intérieur and High life that was screened at the Festival in 2018. At this point they have established a level of mutual understanding that was clearly on display yesterday at the press conference they shared to present their latest film, which was screened after the ceremony to present the
actress with a Donostia award.
Asked about desire in middle age, which is the main theme that the film revolves around, both the actress and the director agreed that it was time to break down taboos. Claire Dennis said that the idea of love being linked to youth was pitiful; as if desire was something fleeting. It was obvious that Juliette was a beautiful woman but what they were filming was something much deeper: her strength and power. The actress, for her part, said that ageing in front of the camera forces you to be true, and when an actor is authentic, age isn’t important, and this helps to change preconceived ideas.
