Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Dardenne brothers presented their latest film Tori and Lokita in the Perlak section yesterdy. It’s about two teenage immigrants trying to pass themselves off as brother and sister in order to get working papers in Belgium. Despite the heartbreaking storyline, the brothers were reluctant to consider Tori and Lokita as a film devoid of hope. They claimed that their vision hadn’t got any darker; it was just that in the last few years levels of violence had got much worse, especially in the criminal underworld that they portray in their film. In any case the friendship and loyalty that exists between the two main characters lights up the story to a certain extent and helps the audience to appreciate just how unfair the situation is that they are going through.
They also mentioned the idea that some critics have that films that show certain realities shouldn’t depress the audience. They thought that if you try to please the audience in this way you may betray the logic of the story and they felt that this was a mistake.
