Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Seventeen years after his first visit to the Film Festival, Oscar-winning Chilean director Sebastián Lelio is back here again to compete for the Golden Shell with The Wonder, a psychological drama set in the Irish Midland in 1862, when an English nurse comes to a small town to investigate how a young girl has been able to fast for months without any apparent ill effects.
Lelio explained that apart from the issues that it dealt with such as the clash between the belief systems of science and faith, the film also addresses the mechanisms of fiction itself and reminds us that without stories we are nothing. “Everything is storytelling, not just entertainment, but also politics, and in this case what makes the film urgently contemporary is the role that storytelling plays in it.” On the one hand, there is the nurse who has doubts and is ready to adapt to what others think, and on the other, people who have found an absolute truth and stick to it come what may. He stresses that he is not saying no to faith, but he is against fanaticism and rigid thinking.
