The young Colombian filmmaker, Laura Mora won the New Directors award here in 2017 with her debut film Matar a Jesús, and returned yesterday in the Official Selection to present Los reyes del mundo which tells the story of five street kids from Medellin, who after receiving notification that the land seized from one of their grandmother’s is going to be returned, decide to go on a journey to fulfil their dream of at last having a place in the world where they can be free and safe. The director acknowledged that as a director and a child of her time, in her latest film she saw herself reflecting contemporary situations as they were filming.
She thought that the issue of land restitution, which is what inspired her to write her film, was something that was going to be at the centre of the debate with the new left-wing government that has just come to power. “In short, I think that as an artist you must ask yourself questions as an individual as well as on behalf of society.”
