David Cronenberg was presented with the second of this year’s Donostia awards by Gaspar Noé at a ceremony in the Victoria Eugenia last night. The French director said that he was honoured to be presenting an award that was so richly deserved to a filmmaker who had produced a body of work that was so radical, nightmarish, and intelligent.
Noé was preceded by a short video message from Cronenberg’s friend Viggo Mortensen who described him as a living legend among filmmakers and for cinephiles and film lovers all around the world.
After receiving his award, the Canadian director said he used to think that lifetime achievement awards were a message to him saying it was time to stop, but he’d come to realise, especially with an award like this, that they were really an encouragement to make more films. He also praised the subversive nature of art: “Now more than ever there’s a need for the crime of art given the events that have happened in the last few years”.
