The Argentine director, Daniel Lerman, who won the Jury Award at San Sebastián in 2107 for A sort of family, presented his latest film The Substitute in the Official Selection yesterday. It addresses the educational community, and Lerman explained that he had felt the need to depict the reality of the situation that these teachers face, which was something that he thought was really worth doing.
The film focuses on Paolo, played by Juan Minujín, who accepts a job as a substitute teacher giving Literature classes to teenagers in a school in a deprived neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Paolo comes from a very different, more academic and intellectual world and is going through a life crisis. Lerman said that the story is based around the character of the teacher, but it included the numerous aspects that make up his life. These emerge from his relationship with his ex-wife, his father, his daughter, with the other teachers and with his students.
