At a video conference he gave yesterday after the screening of A woman, the Chinese director, Wang Chao, explained that he had decided to adapt the story based on the life of the author Zhang Xiu Zhen, that followed her from her late teens into adulthood, when she became a published writer, because she reminded him of his own mother, who was a contemporary of hers. He confessed that it had been much more difficult than making a film set in the present day, and asked about his leading actress, he replied that what had led him to choose her was her charisma and her tough, strong-willed personality that reminded him of his mother and of women in the 1960s and 70s. As for whether there had been progress in recent years with gender violence, he said that this was not just a problem in China, but occurred everywhere.
