Jonás Trueba competed in the Official Selection in 2016 with La Reconquista/ The Reconquest and is now back at the Festival to present his latest film Quién lo impede/Who’s stopping us. It combines documentary, fiction and a testimonial record of the desires and fears of a group of adolescents who were all born in the early 21st century and have recently come of age. “It’s my least theoretical film. It’s impulsive, almost raw,” Trueba, who is not only the director, but also the scriptwriter and producer of the film, explained. The filmmaker said that he always intended to leave the film openended. “It was always intended to be an endless film and he mentioned that, “in a few years I would probably make it differently.” Three hours and forty minutes of footage sum up five years of filming in which he has seen the adolescents that he started out with grow up. “The actors have been really generous because when we started we weren’t really sure that this was going to be a film, but something much crazier,” he said. These 222 minutes also include two intermissions that Trueba claims form part of the film organically. “The film doesn’t continue in the same way after the two breaks. I can’t imagine it without them”.
