Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili won several of the most important awards at the Festival last year with her film Beginning and is now back in San Sebastián chairing the Official Jury. She feels that this is a huge responsibility and she’s very grateful to the festival for inviting her. She believes that it’s very important to hear what her fellow jurors have to say because directors are sometimes so much in their own world and it is really important to cherish other people’s work. As for the recent success of female directors at some of the most important European festivals, she thinks this is great but also expresses the hope that one day we will live in a world where we won’t be talking about whether a woman has won the Palme d’Or but will simply discuss cinema itself or the director.
Asked about what the international success of her film has meant for Georgian cinema, she says that it’s given young directors a lot of hope because they now know that it possible to work outside the system and accomplish something.
