Laurent Cantet’s career has been closely linked to the Festival since he won the New Directors Award here in 1999 with his first film, Human resources. He has returned to San Sebastián from time to time to take part in Perlak and the Official Section and even chaired the Film Schools Meeting jury. However, a constant feature of his work in the last two decades has been his commitment to addressing social and political issues.
Arthur Rambo, the film that he is once again competing for the Golden Shell with this year is no exception to this. It tells the story of how a celebrated author’s career detonates after his vicious online alter-ego is exposed. Cantet explained that, “I made this film because I was interested in questioning the role that the social networks play in our lives. I think that this is a phenomenon that we don’t pay enough attention to. I’m worried about the way that they encourage a kind of superficial communication in which all the messages are on the same level, regardless of whether you’re the President of the USA or a nonentity.”
