2006 Donostia Award recipient Matt Dillon is back in San Sebastian, this time around to present his documentary on the great Cuban singer Francisco Fellove. The Great Fellove provides Dillon with the opportunity to showcase his love for Cuban music in a project that evolved out of recordings that his friend, the jazz musician Joey Altruda made in 1999 with Fellove in Mexico City where he had lived in semi-retirement since 1955. Although Dillon thought that the footage he had shot of the sessions was amazing, he confesses that he didn’t really know what to do with it, so he sat on it for a while, until he later restarted the project in 2013 when he decided to make the story about the bigger picture of the Cuban musicians who emigrated to Mexico, with a special focus on Fellove. Dillon also said that he wanted his film to be about the musicians who left Cuba, in order to contrast them with their contemporaries who had remained on the island and become wellknown after the success of the Buenavista Social Club.
