Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
It is rather unusual for a director, after achieving widespread recognition like the Catalan filmmaker, Carla Simón did in 2017 with her first full-length film Verano 1993, which won more than 30 awards all over the world, to come back straight afterwards with a short film like Correspondencias, which she is presenting this year in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section. However in her case, as well as being the format that she started out in like so many directors, it’s not so surprising. “It’s something quite natural for me. I’ll always be interested in going back to making shorts or a very artisanal kind of cinema; just working on my own with a camera or computer.”
This is just what she did with Correspondencia, that she has codirected with the Chilean filmmaker, Dominga Sotomayor. The project emerged from a proposal by the Production company, Goroka, and consisted of a series of six chapters assigned to women from various fields (literature, cinema, painting, photography, activism..) in which they corresponded with each other on film. The only prerequisite was that they had to talk about something related to womanhood. Simón chose Dominga Sotomayor as a partner, who she had only met once but who she felt shared a common sensibility and they decided that their correspondence would focus on women in their own families.
