Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Luca Guadagnino presented his latest project We Are Who We Are at the Kursaal yesterday. He reflects on gender and sexual identity in a TV series about two teenagers living on a US military base in Italy who pretend to be in a relationship to avoid outside pressure. They don’t really know where they belong, which is something he empathises with: “I grew up in many places and this sense of displacement helps me to keep my mind open.”
Asked about how he works with actors, he explained that he tried to “create a sort of child from the synthesis between the character and the performer so that when the character is alive on the screen you can still feel the essence of the actor.” He also made it quite clear that he thought people should be overwhelmed and not distracted by cinema: “It should be a way of creating a constant uncomfortable need for the audience to change their ideas.”
