Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
2018 Donostia-award winner, Hirokazu Koreeda, is a San Sebastian regular who has competed for the Golden Shell on four occasions and has twice won the Audience Award. This year his first film to be shot outside of Japan, La Vérité, forms part of the Perlak section and has an impressive cast led by Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke, who were the dream team he had always had in mind for the project right from the beginning.
As for the differences between filming in Japan and France, he pointed out that the shooting schedule in his own country was much more intense, whereas in France he had to get used to working only eight hours a day from Monday to Friday, something he found rather disconcerting at first. Apart from this, the only other major change he had noticed was that things tended to take a little longer as he needed to use an interpreter to address his actors and crew. He acknowledged that the language barrier had meant that he hadn’t worked abroad before, but now that he had taken this step, he wouldn’t mind repeating the experience in France, the US or in San Sebastián if he could find a project that appealed to him.
