The Chinese film Lhamo and Skalbe tells the story of the relationship between two youngsters in love in a remote region who are torn between the traditions of their village and their desire to break free from the ties that bind them, set against the background of the rehearsals for an opera inspired by the longest-known Tibetan epic poem.
At the press conference that followed the screening of his film yesterday, the director, Sonthar Gyal, explained that his film wasn’t a perfect love story, as it shows a woman with a powerful sense of guilt who is going to great lengths to find herself. “The difference between Lhamo’s character and the role that she plays in the opera lies in the fact that she tries to save herself, whereas the character in the opera had to wait for her husband to come and rescue her from purgatory.”
