The Greek director Costa Gavras received a Donostia Award at the 67th San Sebastian Festival at a ceremony held last night in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, which paid tribute to one of the leading exponents of films on political and social issues in the history of cinema. The director was clearly moved on receiving the award from the director of the Festival, José Luis Rebordinos. “It’s an enormous honour for directors to receive this award which is so precious to us as filmmakers,” he said.
Rebordinos pointed out that it was important to stress that all cinema is political and that Costa Gavras was determined to talk about things that are going on in the society that we live in. “He analyses power and speaks out for the people that power oppresses and tries to make invisible. It’s an honour to give this political award to a director like Costa-Gavras,” he said. Christos Loulis, Alexandros Bourdoumis and Valeria Golino, closed the ceremony and agreed that working with him was a dream come true. “We need him, we have always needed him, and we always will ”, said Loulis.
