The third edition of Glocal in Progress, the Industry activity for films at the post-production stage made in any European language except English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian, will screen the debut films by Kosovo’s More Raça and by the Catalan directors, Pau Cruanyes and Gerard Vidal, as well as the latest feature film by the Romanian, Andrei Gruzsniczki.
All three films are at the post-production stage and will be screened for an audience of producers, distributors, sales agents and programmers, among other professionals, in order that they may contribute to their completion and international distribution.
More Raça (Kosovo, 1992) portrays in Galaktika e Andromedës / Andromeda Galaxy the difficult situation of a long-term unemployed man in Kosovo. Raça participated in Berlinale Talents 2019. The film marks her jump to feature films after having put her name to three shorts.
Emil, by Andrei Gruzsniczki (Ploiesti, Romania, 1962), is a tale of mourning and ghosts in a small Romanian hamlet, with touches of black humour. His previous feature films landed accolades at the Transylvania and Rome festivals and at the Romanian Film Academy awards.
The Catalans Pau Cruanyes (Barcelona, 1992) and Gerard Vidal (Barcelona, 1992) sign their first film, Les dues nits d’ahir / Yesterday’s Two Nights, after having co-helmed the short film Celebración, winner of the SGAE–Nueva Autoría Award for Best Director at the Sitges Festival in 2016.
Of the six films presented at the two previous editions, three have been selected for the Festival’s different sections: in 2018 Dantza participated in the Official Selection in a special screening, and Un om la locul lui / A Decent Man in New Directors, while this year Nematoma by Ignas Jonynas, winner of an award at Glocal in Progress 2018, will compete for the Kutxabank-Nuevos Directores Award.
Glocal in Progress will run on September 23, 24 and 25, coinciding with Films in Progress 36 and with the VIII Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum. Its objective is to lend greater visibility to European productions in non-hegemonic languages.
Glocal in Progress completes the work started in 2014 with the Basque Government Department of Culture and Language Policy with the creation of Glocal Cinema, an initiative to promote networks between film industries which produce films in non-hegemonic languages.
The films selected for Glocal in Progress compete for the Glocal in Progress Industry Award. Presented by the companies Ad Hoc Studios, BTeam Pictures, Deluxe Spain, Dolby Iberia, Laserfilm Cine y Video, Nephilim Producciones and No Problem Sonido, this award consists in the post-production services listed in the Awards Rules for the winning film.
Furthermore, the Glocal in Progress Award with its EUR 10,000 will go to the majority producer of the film winning the Glocal in Progress Industry Award.
Emil, an old man who doesn't believe in ghosts, and his best friend, Titi, live in a remote hamlet which could be heaven on Earth, where nothing is out of the ordinary. The story begins at the memorial held for the 40 days since the death of Smaranda, Emil's late wife. As the days pass, Emil realizes that Titi is starting to look as though his days are numbered. He tries to cheer him up, but to no avail. The reason is that, 40 days after her passing, Smaranda has started to haunt Titi, her lover. The story uses black humour and mystery to narrate the effort it takes to accept others in friendship or in love.
Kosovo 2019, corruption and lack of employment make it impossible for Shpëtim to find a job. There isn't any job available and the few open positions that he finds, he is considered too old for, because he is 52. Things get more complicated when the orphanage sends his daughter back to live with him and he doesn't have a proper place to stay. After the many attempts and frauds he experiences, Shpëtim decides to sell his kidney for a transplant and escape to Europe in search of a better life.
One summer night, Eric enters a house and steals the ashes of Pol, his recently deceased friend. That same night, Eric and his two best friends, Ona and Marcel, set out on a journey by car to scatter the ashes. But the escapade will end up turning into a bubble that separates them from reality and increasingly distances them from the return home and from their initial intention. Although the three friends have felt death very close, they are incapable of understanding it. The loss will make them realise that it’s impossible to go back to being the way they were before, since their friend’s death will leave an indelible mark on their lives. Debut film.
