Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño and José Mari Goenaga, the directors of Loreak and Handia, are competing once again in the Official Selection with La trinchera infinita, their first feature film in Spanish. It tells the story of one of the ‘moles’ who remained in hiding for more than thirty years until they were amnestied by Franco’s regime in 1969. Goenaga revealed that he first learnt about them when he saw the documentary, 30 years of darkness, which gave him the idea of making a fictional film about this subject. “The moles are ideal material to show how we can be conditioned by fear,” Goenaga explained, and Garaño stressed that, “this is what most attracted us. This film aims to be an allegory about fear.”
The film is always seen from the viewpoint of the man who, with the help of his wife, spent more than 30 years hidden away in a village in Andalucia. The directors said that they were really interested in was taking an approach that focused on the psychology and humanity of the characters, without totally neglecting the political context.
