The Swiss director Simon Jaquemet found his inspiration for Der Unschuldige/ The Innocent in a news item on TV almost a decade ago. A woman described what she felt when she learnt that the man who had been her lover was released from prison after serving a long sentence for murder. In the film the main character forms part of a highly conservative Christian community who also works in a research lab, but neither faith nor science can provide her with the certainties that she is searching for. The release of her former lover prompts her to behave increasingly strangely until she is finally unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy. This distinction is not very clear for the audience either as the director acknowledges that there was a need for a certain degree of ambiguity in his film.
