Danny DeVito was presented with the first of this year’s Donostia awards by film director J.A. Bayona at a ceremony in the Kursaal last night. Bayona said he was honoured to present the award to someone who he described as being able to capture the very essence of the human condition, and stressed the incredible career that DeVito had enjoyed as an actor, director and producer not only in cinema but also on stage and television.
On receiving the award, DeVito gave a short speech thanking the Festival for this great honour. He said that he felt overwhelmed by the generosity of the people here who had treated him so kindly, and said he would treasure it forever. “I want to dedicate it to all the movie fans who scrape together a couple of bucks to see movies on the big screen the way that directors and writers think they should be seen. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you!”
