Danny DeVito explained at the press conference that he gave yesterday afternoon that he was really excited to be receiving his Donostia Award and that it was a real honour as this festival is famous all over the world.
DeVito recalled how he used to spend his childhood weekends watching films, and he always thought it would be great to be an actor when he saw his heroes on the big screen but he never thought he’d actually be able to do it himself.
As an actor he pointed out that what he always tried to do was break down the barrier between himself and the audience and enter their world and for them to enter his. From an early age he confessed he’d also wanted to go beyond acting: it was seeing the Battle of Algiers back in the 1960s he’d been inspired to find out what directing would be like.
