Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
For his latest film, La Villa, Robert Guédiguian returns to his habitual settings in Marseille with his usual team of actors. The French director says that he was inspired to make it after reading Chekhov’s ‘The Cherry Orchard’ with its moving final sentence: “Life has slipped by as if I hadn’t lived.” He says that he didn’t want to just make a nostalgic film, what he wanted was to make one that would be universal in scope, and that the reunion among the main characters in the film encourage them to reflect on what they have lost as time has gone by. He says that the basic conflict that is raised in La Villa is how to remain true to the values of solidarity in a contemporary society like ours that is so individualistic. He thinks that one possible response to this is what happens at the end of the film, when these three characters take in some refugees.
