A ROMANTIC HERO MORE BY MISTAKE THAN DESIGN

Hugh Grant gave an entertainingly witty press conference yesterday in the Kursaal to present his latest film Florence Foster Jenkins in which he plays the role of the husband and manager of the worst opera singer in history alongside Meryl Streep. He confessed that he had felt rather frightened by the prospect of working with Streep and director Stephen Frears and that this had led him to do a lot of research on his character, something that was quite unusual for him. “Meryl is intimidating to work with because she’s so good.”

Asked whether cinema was the church of his choice, as Ethan Hawke had declared on receiving his Donosti Award, he downplayed the importance of his profession and said that all he tried to do was to make his work as entertaining as he could. He pointed out that he

had got into romantic comedy more by mistake rather than design, as he had been just waiting around for good scripts and all that turned up were romantic comedies., although

he did stress how difficult it was not to be boring and obnoxious playing romantic heroes.

As for the current state of British cinema, he felt that the industry was quite different to the one

he had known back in the late 1980s when he first came to San Sebastián with Gonzalo Suárez‘s Remando al viento. Although he confessed to often being asked why he doesn’t do TV work, he confessed it was because he still clung to the idea of the scale and glamour of cinema: “It has a special magic that even the best television can never match”.
