Bille August, the multi-awardwinning Danish director is chairing the Official Jury this year, and says that he likes the fact that the films in competition are so diverse: “It makes you see that human beings, wherever we may be from, have a lot in common.” He confesses that the films
that touch him the most are ones that deal with human relationships: “I basically connect with stories that tell how we interact with others. Of course this has to be told in a cinematic way.”
To talk about human relationships August often employs the theme of the family, as he did in Silent Heart, a critically acclaimed return to form after a long period making big productions outside Scandinavia, which competed here two years ago. “The family is a microcosmos that contains all the dramas of life and also allows you to talk about several different generations.,” he explained. As for his latest projects, the first of these, 55 steps, tells the true story of a woman in a mental hospital who hires a lawyer to sue the medical establishment and stars Helena Bonham Carter and Hilary Swank. The Chinese Widow which is about an American pilot shot down in the Second World War who is saved by the Chinese widow of the title, will also be released shortly with a script written by August himself.
