El hombre de las mil caras is a film about the flight from Spain of the corrupt ex-head of the Spanish Civil Guard with the help of the spy Paco Paesa. At the press conference he gave after the screening of his film in the Official Section yesterday, the director Alberto Rodríguez stressed that, although the characters in the film did exist in real life, the story that it tells isn’t completely true. They quickly realised that they were never going to find out what really happened, so they decided to make the film from a fictional perspective. “Throughout the film we continually try to ensure that the audience knows that we are in a film, and that it’s all artifice,” Rodríguez pointed out.
He began to write the script in 2012 and funnily enough, as he went on, he realised that his main subject was becoming more and more topical, and that the film reflected a problem that Spaniards still haven’t managed to overcome. He also explained that he never wanted to turn Paesa into a hero. “I think he’s a fascinating character but I don’t share his conception of morality. On the other hand Eduardo Fernandez, who plays Paesa, acknowledged that he hadn’t wanted to judge him when it came to playing the role, as he believed that we were all capable of the very best and the very worst.
