Magical Girl, the second film by the Spanish director Carlos Vermut, was screened yesterday in the Official Section. Vermut said that his idea was to make a crimefilm but instead of starting from an abstract premise he decided to place it in the more specific, recognizable setting of modern Spain. The network of extortion, half-truths and obsessive impulses that the film portrays make up an unfinished puzzle of which theaudience are only provided with some of the pieces. “I trust in the audience’sintelligence to be able to complete the story”, Vermut said, on being asked about the narrative structure that Magical Girl builds up. “Normally, whenever I’m not sure about whether it’s appropriate to make certain situations explicit or not, in the end I choose not to show them. In this respect I like the audience to be able tohave a moral debate among themselves.”
