Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Market grows for non-English pics, boosted by VOD sales
Film buyers for international pics are increasingly becoming more cautious in their acquisitions policies, and demand more original films.
These are some conclusions at a round table Wednesday at the San Sebastián Film Festival on the Spanish Cinema and International Sales.
One market trend is the growing demand of films with original appeal, said Vicente Canales, founder of Film Factory Ent., suggesting that San Sebastián’s Pearls player, Argentine Damián Scifrón’s Wild Tales, a Spanishco-production, became an international sales hit after buyers discovered it as a feelgood movie at Cannes.
The international market for non- English language films is going better, recovering from the deep crisis it suffered five years ago, said Wild Bunch founder-partner Vincent Maraval.
VOD is indeed probably the bigger argument for hope. Per New York-based Eric Schnedecker, head of sales at France’s Urban Distribution International, Spanish film sales are recovering, and buyers demand rights for the VOD window.
Although still not consolidated in markets like Spain, VOD has started to offer some interesting figures in big international territories such as France, Russia or China, per Maraval.
Wild Bunch decided to release in May Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York on the French Internet market, selling 200,000 buys at a Euros 8 ($10.4) price per click. Of them, $5.2 of each click went to the distributor.
Welcome to New York’s distribution costs in the French VOD market where around $194,000. Costs for a theatrical release would have reach $649,000, Maraval said. “In the future many films will only launch on VOD and TV, because the theatrical window is becoming increasingly harder, said Tornasol Films’ producer Gerardo Herrero.
