A new wave of genuine Eastern promise

The Polish screenwriter, producer and director, Małgorzata Szumowska, has written six feature films in addition to a number of documentaries and short films. She has received numerous accolades throughout Europe and the most important film awards in Poland, and her film.

33 Scenes from Life is programmed for the “Eastern Promises” retrospective this year.

This is the first time that she’s been in San Sebastián and the first time she’s been on a jury anywhere, and she says that it feels like a kind of mental holiday as she never has time to go to the cinema when she’s working.

When she judges films she tends to rely on her intuition. She likes films to show her something from a different perspective and feels that you can see the talent of new directors in the power of their images. She’s not sure that she forms part of the specific generation of filmmakers in the Eastern Promises retrospective though acknowledges that perhaps they do have a certain dark sense of humour in common.

Although Poland has a bigger market and can invest more money in its film industry, she thinks that there is a new wave of low-budget cinema from countries like Moldova, Rumania, Latvia and Serbia that is much more interesting than the films coming out of her country.
