Toto and his Sisters is a moving documentary drama about the harsh reality of the life of a 10 year-old Rumanian boy living in a rundown neighbourhood with his sisters waiting for their mother to get out of prison. Through Toto’s life the Rumanian director Alexander Nanau shows his admiration for these deprived children, abandoned to their fate, without any adult to look after them, educate them, and above all, to give them love. Nanau stresses that he hasn’t made a classic documentary as he doesn’t ask any questions or provide any solutions. “I don’t want the audience to feel pity: these children are really tough.”
