The Korean filmmaker Shim Sung-bo arrived in San Sebastián yesterday to present Haemu in the Official section, and although it is his first film as a director, he is already a familiar name here in San Sebastián as he wrote the script for Memories of Murder, the film that earned Joon-ho Bong the Silver Shell for best director back in 2003. The film is set on the high seas and combines aspects of a thriller, an action film and a social drama. “The script is based on a real tory about the death of a group of illegal immigrants from China in the hold of a boat that was smuggling them into Korea. It’s easier for me to start out from a real event as I can carry outresearch that enriches my work as a scriptwriter, but then as I’m writing I cease to be conditioned by the truth of what really happened and my priority becomes how to construct a story that the audience will find attractive.
