Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Writer and cinema critic Nuria Vidal finds herself a member of the Horizontes Latinos jury this year after having spent eight years here on the Festival Management Committee, as well as having worked at numerous other festivals and published more than twenty books on cinema. She thinks that Festivals are still important and really necessary although now that in the digital age we can watch all kinds of films anywhere they have the function of selecting films and telling the audience what might be worth watching. In addition they still provide a meeting place for people from the industry to exchange ideas.
She thinks that the Latin American film industry is in excellent health. It has changed a great deal and the latest generation of filmmakers no longer feels quite so obliged to denounce social injustices and this means they can do other things: film noir, genre films, comedies, or musicals. She mentions, for example, the Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke, who is making some really entertaining personal films, or his compatriot, Carlos Reygadas, with a more mystical, almost spiritual kind of cinema. In any case, getting a film screened here is already a preliminary award in itself as it means your film gets the chance to go to other European festivals and be seen and get on the distribution circuits.
