The Spanish National Film Award was presented to Lola Salvador, one of the most renowned Spanish scriptwriters, in a ceremony held yesterday at the San Telmo Museum. The Spanish minister of Education, Culture and Sport, José Ignacio Wert said that, “Lola Salvador is not just a highly versatile filmmaker but is also someone who is deeply committed to her profession,” in a speech he gave in praise of the award-winner.
Lola Salvador paraphrased Scott Fitzgerald’s description of the period he spent writing screenplays in Hollywood in the 1930s when she came to describe a scriptwriter’s trade. “We’re like cows: they squeeze us, they milk us and from time to time they put us out to pasture. Our job is to tell stories and turn an unjust world into something like paradise; we are Quixotes by day and Scheherazades by night. The day that they finish off scriptwriters, they’ll finish off cinema.”
