London-born Demetrios Matheou is a journalist, writer and programmer. He started his career as a newspaper reporter, but eventually gravitated towards arts and culture. He worked as a television critic, theatre critic and architectural journalist, before turning his full attention to film in 1996, when he became news editor of Premiere Magazine’s UK edition.
His film writing has since appeared in most of Britain’s broadsheet newspapers, including The Guardian, The Observer, The Times and Sunday Times and The Independent on Sunday. He has been the resident film critic for Scotland’s Sunday Herald newspaper since 2004, is a regular contributor to Sight and Sound magazine and a member of the collective of journalists who produce The Arts Desk website, where he reviews both films and theatre. He occasionally comments on cinema for the BBC.
Demetrios is the author of The Faber Book of New South American Cinema, published in 2010. In the same year he co-curated South American Renaissance, a major retrospective season for The British Film Institute. He has collaborated with a number of Latin American festivals in London, and this year co-curated the city’s first Argentine Film Festival. He has also contributed to the guide to film history Cinema: The Whole Story and penned the eponymous entry of the essential collection of “alternative movie lists,” Ten Bad Dates With De Niro.
