Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Screenwriter and novelist Guillermo Arriaga is perhaps best known for the screenplays he wrote for the Alejandro González Iñarritu’s Amores Perros, 21 grams and Babel. When asked about his famous non-linear style, he says that cinema is a young art that is still trying to find its own language “I think it’s unnatural to tell stories in a linear way. In real life we use highly sophisticated structures to tell our own stories; we don’t do this in linear fashion. We shouldn’t put a straightjacket on stories.”
He’s very strict with actors and doesn’t like them to change what he’s written just because they think it sound more natural “The actor acts, the director directs and the writer writes. It’s as if
in a football match, the goalkeeper played as centre-forward”.
He claims that Latin America has a lot of stories to tell, but that it needs to find the appropriate structures to do this. “What happens is that sometimes we try to tell them as if they were from another country; we need to find a way of our own to do this so that it really works” .
