Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Swedish film Happy End was screened in the Official Section yesterday. Although it dealt with the grim subject of battered wives, its director Björn Runge said he thought its title was justified as, ”it’s an optimistic film that aims to convey the idea that new opportunities can open up to every one at some time in their life.”
He also said that the title wasn’t 100% crystal-clear: “Maybe it’s not a happy end at all. It’s up to us to read into what we think will happen to these characters after the film is over.” He thought that the script by the Danish writer, Kim Fupz Aakeson cleverly left doors open and that what was important for him in the film was that people who didn’t know each other met, and that this brought about changes in the characters.
The producer Madeleine Ekman said that they didn’t see the film so much as being about women being beaten, but rather that if you were in a bad relationship you had a chance to change it.
As to whether the theme of the film was about strong women and weak men, the actress Anne Petren said she didn’t really agree with this,as the characters change during the story. “What’s interesting is the situation they are in; sometimes they are strong and sometimes not. Maybe they come out of the film stronger but that’s not the whole story.
