Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Although Filipino director Raya Martin is only 26 years old he has already shot eight fulllength
films and has already had retrospectives devoted to his work. He’s come to San Sebastián to form part of the official Section jury and reveals that he’s never worked in anything apart from cinema,“if you can call that work”.He says he’s managed to keep working at this extraordinary pace because his films are very fast and cheap to make.He began to take his films to festivals when he was 21 and this made him grow really quickly as he found himself surrounded by some really well-known directors.
Recently he hasn’t made any films as after taking two films to Cannes last year, he realised this was too much and he needed to slow down to have more time for everyday things.
He says he wouldn’t call himself a film buff so when he watches films what he looks for is something that excites him and gives him nightmares and that he can still remember two weeks after he’s seen it. He has been called l’enfant terrible of Filipino cinema, although sometimes he thinks he’s only been given this label because he’s so young. “Making so many films at this age is unusual; it’s crazy, to tell you the truth.”
