Isabel Coixet’s short documentary on the desertification of the Aral Sea was presented yesterday at the Festival. The director says that she had been obsessed by the subject and couldn’t believe that a sea had been turned into a desert, so she accepted the commission
she had been offered by the We are Water Foundation and went to Uzbekistan to shoot the film. “I’ve just tried to explain a catastrophe that no one could have imagined; not even the Soviet official who signed the decree in the 1960s to divert the waters of the two large rivers that used to feed the Aral”.
