The Australian director Ana Kokkinos has come to San Sebastián to present Blessed, in the Official Section, accompanied by the producer Al Clark and the actress Miranda Otto. Her film deals with the relations between seven Melbourne teenagers and their parents over a period of 36 hours and is based on the play Who’s afraid of the Working Class? It is divided into two parts and gradually increases in intensity; in the first it tells the story from the perspective of the children and in the second part it focuses on their mothers, who are just as lost and disorientated as their offspring. As the film progresses the audience’s perspective also changes as they gradually become more understanding of the mothers’ seemingly lax attitude towards their children in the second part. The director of Australian TV programmes like Young Lionsand The Secret Life of us shot the film in a working-class district of Melbourne, where she herself grew up, and it also has a wonderful soundtrack by Cezary Skubiszewski.
