Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Manel Pérez Estremera has a long-standing relationship with the Festival and he is here this year as the chairman of the Horizontes Latinos Jury, accompanied by the Uruguayan
director Federico Veiroj and the producer Ilse Hughan. He thinks that “as this is the most important festival in Spain I think that it is great that San Sebastián has a section devoted to Latin American cinema because it has historical links to the Spanish language and to us, and I think it is wonderful that the Festival has gradually got more involved in this by giving it a section of its own and a special prize.”
Although it is still too soon to judge, he thinks that the section this year includes a varied and highly representative sample of what they have been doing in Latin America over the last year. The historically most powerful film industries, Mexico and Argentina in this case, have brought
the most films and the country that is missing is Brazil, probably because its films need to be subtitled, which make them less accessible in this kind of Festival.
He thinks that, “Latin American cinema has always had the same virtues and the same flaws: it has very creative story-lines and it has an extraordinary ability to tell these in a highly original way, but it also faces enormous financial problems.” Nevertheless in the last few years huge changes have occurred. He notes that for example in Colombia the quality and quantity of films have increased significantly since the 2003 Film Law, and points this out as an example for anyone who thinks that laws and subsidies are pointless.
