Making plans for Lena focuses on a divorced mother of two who gets together with her family at their summer house in Brittany. It stars Chiara Mastroianni and according to its director Christophe Honoré, the film makes us ask questions about immaturity. ”At the press conference he gave after the screening of his film yesterday he explained that,“in my generation we are afraid that we won’t be considered to be adults so we talk to our children as if they are much more grown up than they actually are.”In order to reflect this idea he decided to make his main character a woman.“There is a great deal of social and family pressure on women, and a kind of guilt about motherhood”, he claimed.
Chiari Mastroianni expanded on this theme: “the film shows that there is a paradox between the fact that we think it’s great for a father to get granted custody of his children whereas it’s not the done thing for a woman to give them up”.
She also pointed out that she thought what was original about the film was the fact that it wasn’t deliberately aiming to appeal to the audience. “It’s much more human to show the contradictions in a character”.
