Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Meryl Streep received this year’s second Donostia Award last night at a ceremony in the Kursaal. After an initial introduction by the Spanish actor Eduardo Noriega who described her as “one of the best actresses in the history of cinema with great technique and an exquisite sensibility” and reminded us of her two Oscars for Kramer Vs Kramer and Sophie’s Choice as well as the numerous prizes she had won all over the world, the president of the official Jury, Jonathan Demme, who is also a close friend of the actress, came on stage . He felt that he could explain her magic in five elements: “a wonderful appearance, a brilliant mind, a great imagination, profound courage and most important, a gigantic heart".
After being presented with her award by Demme, the actress revealed that she knew that her father and mother in heaven would totally agree with what they had just said.
She wanted to thank the Festival management and organisers, Jonathan Demme and all the Jury, and all the audience who had bought tickets to come there. “I’m very touched; I shall return sometime.” She said that it felt odd to be standing there all on her own, and confessed that every time she received an award she felt guilty because she hadn’t stood alone in any of her films so that, “this award honours all my colleagues".
She closed by saying how proud she was to be an actress and stressed how art was necessary as it knits nations together and connects souls across cultural divides.
She finally thanked everyone “for not being tired of me considering how long we’ve known each other".
